Awards & Patents

From the Baker Group:

  • Magellan BioScience Group, Inc. and the University of South Florida announced that they have been awarded a Phase I Small Business Innovative Research Grant (SBIR) from the National Institute of Health (NIH) and matching funds from the Florida High Tech Corridor Council totaling more than $350,000. Magellan will team with USF scientists Drs. Dennis Kyle and Alberto Van Olphen of the Department of Global Health, College of Public Health, and Dr. Bill Baker of the Department of Chemistry, College of Arts and Sciences. The grants will support a multidisciplinary drug discovery collaboration to identify novel anti-malarial drugs from Magellan's and Dr. Baker's diverse marine microbial collections.

From the Bisht Group:

  • Dr. Kirpal Bisht has applied for a U.S. Patent in collabroration with Dr. Ravi Kothapalli of The Moffitt Cancer Center entitled: "Farnesylamine derivatives and method of use." (US Patent Application 60/917,861 filed on May 14, 2007).

From the Eddaoudi Group:

  • The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded Dr. Mohamed Eddaoudi a grant worth approximately $900K over 3 years. The grant includes two co-PI's from outside USF, as well as Drs. Zaworotko and Space of the Chemistry Department.

From the Ming Group:

  • The National Science Foundation awarded Dr. Li-June Ming a grant for $270K over 3 years.

From the Manetsch Group:

  • The James & Esther King Biomedical New Investigator Research Program recently awarded Professor Roman Manetsch a grant of $375k for 3 years. The grant is based on collaborative efforts with the research group of Professor Hong-Gang Wang at the Moffitt Cancer and Research Institute, and with Dr. Wayne Guida as Senior Faculty Mentor.

From the Space Group:

  • The National Science Foundation has awarded the University of South Florida a Major Research Instrumentation Program (MRI) Grant of $499,999 for the acquistion of a computational cluster for research and training at the University of South Florida in partnership with Eckerd College and the University of Tampa. The proposal for this grant was a collabrative effort with other faculty members in the Physics and Engineering Departments at USF, as well as Dr. Cardenas and Dr. Guida of the Chemistry Department.
