Gradaute Program Handbook - Facilities and Services

Health Services

Student Health Service is located in SHS 100. Their telephone number is 974-2331. Hours are Monday through Thursday 8:00 am to 5:30 pm and Friday 10:00 am to 5:30 pm, when classes are in session. These hours may vary during breaks and holidays. The Student Health Service will post any variations.

The health fee that is included in your tuition entitles you to many cost saving services:

  • Unlimited visits to the nurses or doctors if ill of injured. A fee is charged to be seen by a physician in the specialty clinics.
  • Laboratory tests performed at the Student Health Service's clinical lab or sent to an outside lab at reduced cost.
  • The use of Student Health Service's specialty clinics at a reduced cost. These specialty clinics include: Gynecology, Antigen, Dermatology and Allergy. Currently, physicians are dispensing some medications. These medications are most frequently prescribed drugs at Student Health Service. However, students will be referred to an outside pharmacy with a prescription if a medication is needed that is not included in Student Health Service's medication inventory. Also, the Student Health Service has contracted with all Kash n’ Karry pharmacies to fill student prescriptions at reduced rates. Simply show your student ID to obtain these special prices.

The registration requirement for Measles/Rubella immunization can be administered for a fee at Student Health Service. Psychiatric counseling is funded by the Student Health Service and is available at the Counseling Center for Human Development located in the student services building, SVC 2124 (974-2831).

Student Health Service serves as a walk-in clinic and maintains a day infirmary only. Bring your current validated ID card when you go to the clinic. You will be screened by a nurse. If necessary, you will then be referred to one of the staff physicians.

To help alleviate the cost of services not covered by the student health fee, it is strongly recommended that all students purchase the student health and accident insurance policy available through student government. If this coverage is not desired, all students should consider getting coverage that approximates this additional insurance.

Library

Extensive online database and electronic journal access is available through the USF Virtual Library. As a graduate student you will make extensive use these resources as well as the University library. Chemical Abstracts is located on the first floor, current and bound journals are on the second floor and chemistry books are located on the fifth floor of the library. The department has access to many online databases, including Chemical Abstracts (CAS) online, Beilstein CrossFire, SciFinder Scholar, and Web of Science. The library requires a validated ID card to check-out books. There is an abundance of copying machines and the library has modern on-line literature searching capabilities and an extensive interlibrary loan network.

On occasion it may be necessary to use the Shimberg Health Sciences Library, which is most easily entered from 30th street. Books from the Health Sciences Library cannot normally be checked out unless you have approval from your research advisor.

Student Offices

During the first semester of attendance, graduate students are provided with office space. Once a student selects an advisor a desk may be provided in the professor's laboratory.

Identification Cards

ID cards are made in the Marshall Center (CTR 105). A $10 fee is charged for the ID card. Photographs for ID cards are taken after initial registration. The ID card is validated (encoded) at the time fees are paid.

Mail

Each Graduate Student is provided with a mailbox in SCA 400. Contact the Department of Chemistry office for assistance.
