There is no Florida state income tax and no Social Security is withheld from departmental Assistantships. Federal withholding depends on how your W-4 form is completed.
A University of South Florida Parking Permit is needed for all campus parking. The cost of a permit varies, and they are available annually, beginning in August, or by the semester. For students beginning at times other than Semester I, the permit may be prorated. Permits are available at Parking Services near the Physical Plant.
A Florida driver's license is required for any student receiving any financial support due to employment (i.e., Teaching or Research Assistantships). This must be done within 30 days of initial employment. For general information or to schedule an appointment call 933-7729.
There is no length of residency requirement, and students can register to vote at the Temple Terrace City Hall, 11250 North 56th Street, Monday - Friday 9 am to 4 pm.
There is limited on-campus housing for graduate students. In addition, there are numerous apartments and condominium complexes located within walking distance of campus. The office of off-campus housing is located in the Marshal Center (CTR 254, 974-3749).
When renting an apartment, two expenses to anticipate beyond the rent and required deposits are the telephone and electricity (all other utilities are usually included, ask to make sure). To assist you in planning for these expenses the following breakdown may be helpful:
Telephone - initially about $100.00, which included installation fees, deposit, and first month's service. Installation can usually be done within 3 working days and can be initiated by calling 1-800-282-7272. GTE provides connection service only; any other telephone needs must be purchased separately.
Electricity - $166 (deposit $150 and start-up $16). Service can be initiated by calling TECO at 223-0800.
