24th Annual Scholarship & Alumni Celebration

Our annual celebration was held on April 7, 2011, at the USF Alumni Center. Dr. Robert Potter, Associate Dean for Graduate & Undergraduate Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences and member of the Chemistry faculty, opened the evening. Dr. Wayne Guida, Associate Chair and Professor in Chemistry, presided over the celebration with 117 guests. Twenty-five awards were presented to undergraduate students by members of the faculty and 88 undergrads were recognized on the honor roll for having maintained at least a 3.75 GPA. Lt. Colonel Charles Asowata   Lt. Colonel Charles Aiyudubie Asowata was the Outstanding Alumnus for 2011 and the keynote speaker for the awards celebration.

Dr. Asowata was born in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. He was raised and educated in the region. He immigrated to the United States to pursue his higher education and received a Bachelors in Chemistry from USF. He received his Masters from Texas Southern University and his Ph.D. from George Mason University. Having attained US citizenship, Lt. Colonel Asowata joined the armed services and currently serves in the Army. He’s received the Meritorious Service Medal, the US Army Commendation Medal and the US Congress Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for Outstanding Service.

He is married with five adoring children and two grandchildren. He is proud of his two college graduates, a current college student, a high school student and a health care provider.
