Applications for Spring 2018

Please read carefully. Failure to follow the procedure may cause delays or ineligibility to join the program. Completing this application does not guarantee an REU position. Positions are very competitive; read instructions thoroughly and apply as soon as possible.

There are two sections below. One is for new undergraduate researchers and the other is for returning undergraduate researchers.

For priority consideration for summer the online application must be submitted by January 2nd.

For new students and students who want to work with a new faculty mentor

Summer and fall 2017, deadlines for New REUs

For priority consideration for summer the online application must be submitted by April 21st.

Fall-only applicants are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible and no later than August 7th.

Interviews with faculty members will be scheduled as soon as possible but some interviews may take place as late as the week before the term starts (this would be the term for which you applied, summer or fall).

Permit form (completed by the applicant and signed by the faculty mentor) must be turned in by close of business, May 19th for summer (August 26th for fall-only applications).

Once granted a permit, applicants must register for CHM 4970 or IDS 4914 before regular registration for the term ends. No late-add petitions will be supported or processed.

Application procedure

  1. Before you can apply online you will need to do the following: (1) review the mentors’ webpages and identify three top choices (if a professor has already told you they will accept you in their group, this step will not be necessary), (2) gather the name and email address for an academic reference (former or current professor or TA), (3) have your UID # ready, (4) although not a final decision, you will need to enter whether you will choose CHM 4970 (and for how many credits) or IDS 4914 (zero-credit option).
  2. Use this link to complete the online application: New REU Online Application Form.You should see a message on the screen confirming successful submission. If you do not see the confirmation page, please resubmit. No confirmation emails are sent. Please, do not email us to confirm your submission.
  3. The REU Program will work to match you with a faculty mentor. However, not all faculty mentors may have enough openings. We will email you to schedule an appointment to meet with the interested faculty mentor. If you are not contacted by Monday the week classes start, you should assume we were unable to find you a position.
  4. Once applicants have met the faculty advisor, they must print out and complete a Research Undergraduate Permit form.This form needs the faculty mentor’s signature. In order to expedite the process, please bring the form with you to the meeting with the faculty mentor.
  5. Students complete the forms including section number CHM 4970 for credit and IDS 4914 for zero credit and bring the form to SCA 203, the SNSM Advising Offices (see deadlines).

  7. The student then registers online for the course and section assigned.

For returning students who will work with the same faculty mentor

Summer and fall 2016 deadlines for Returning REUs

Permit form (completed by the applicant and signed by the faculty mentor) must be turned in by close of business, May 11th for summer (August 26th for fall-only applications).

Once granted a permit, applicants must register for CHM 4970 or IDS 4914 before regular registration for the term ends. No late-adds will be processed.

  1. Use this link to complete the Returning REUs Online Application form.You should see a message on the screen confirming successful submission. If you do not see the confirmation page, please resubmit. No confirmation emails are sent. Please, do not email us to confirm your submission.
  2. Print and fill out the Research Undergraduate permit formwith the faculty mentor and indicate you are a returning student. Your faculty mentor must sign this form; it is your responsibility to secure their signature.
  3. Please drop the permit form off to the SNSM Advising Center Front desk in SCA 203, see deadline above. Permits will be processed within 3 business days.
  4. The academic advisor will grant a permit and notify the student. The student then registers online for the course and section assigned.
